If you are bored at work you can read this.
Who helped you in the making of this film?
Well contributing filmers for footage but most of the film was filmed by me 75-80 procent and 100 procent edited / concept by me. My friend johan made 3 songs for the video. But a film like this everybody who is in it helps out cause they are skating for me and my camera with “nothing” in return. I don´t pay them or give them products or whatever. They skate cause they wanna skate and they do it with their heart. This is really important for me, this is not a hammer business film. All the people inside I know and met in person. They are my friends or good people that i know and like. I only use footage of people i like and know this i one very important rule for me.
With all the very personal footage involved, what does it make you feel to be at a premiere and show your finished work to all those people?
It is always emotional for me and sometimes very hard. For me it means a lot more and I have a deeper understanding to some of the images. It brings back a lot of memories and personal issues. I don´t like being on premiers. With my first film I only went to one premier the one in malmö. With this one i did about 5 so far but I don´t wanna do anymore. I don´t like it. I like my film and that is all I want to know. I don´t wanna hear or see others peoples faces and reactions. It is always nice if people like it but it sucks when people come with some smartass bullshit about whatever crap. Keep your negative critic for yourself and don´t bother me with your bad taste!
Showing that very personal side of yours to a huge crew of skaters you don‘t know, does it make you feel awkward sometimes? Or is something you are really aiming for? Do you want people to get to know you that way?
I want my films to be personal cause like i said above everything in my life matters my past my family history my love life my friends and so on. We go through hard times and good times it all matters. When I stand on my board my board will tell me straight away how my soul is. If I have a stressed out mind or whatever. My skateboard doesn´t lie, it tells me straight away. – Pontus your heart is broken or your brain is mental and my skateboard will give me shit for it or it will help me. My skateboard is a very honest straight up persona.
How did you pick the skaters in the video? From the mixing of the parts it seems that you guys are all pretty close. Is it strictly just good friends?
They are all good people and nice guys and my friends. I don´t really pick out skaters it all comes naturally. People come to malmö hang out with me we go for sessions and things start to happen and we get to know each other. Then after a while some guys have more footage and others and it kind of turn into working on a part. But we don´t work and go on crazy missions we go on skatemissions but they are very laid back and they are all about having fun and a good time. Sometimes we go for skating and we end up eating ice cream and drinkign coffee all day. Good skating comes when it comes, when the spirit is right the moment is the the spot is there and so on. It just happens when it happens and i don´t push it or force it. I just tag along and skate with the boys…
In an interview you said, that you are strictly losing money on this projects. So what keeps you going anyways? Some people spend 25000 euro on a new car I spend that money on a film. We all have different ways here in life. Film making is something I love doing and some people enjoy a shiny new car.
It‘s been five years since the release of „The Strongest of the Strange“. What are the major differences between „The Strongest“ and „In Search of the Miracoluos“ to you, how has your approach, your work attitude and your creative demand changed?
Maybe strongest was a bit more black and bitter and this one is a bit lighter and more colorful. I really like the idea of using classic beautiful symbols like a rainbow or stars or a sunset. They are beautiful but at the same time they are such a cliché. It is always much more easier to go into the dark way and make something interesting out of that then to make something beautiful interesting. I like this challenge.
John Dahlquist wrote that „In Search of the Miracoluos“ serves another personal purpose, namely the loss of your beloved grandparents. Did making, finishing and showing this film to others help you dealing with that personal tragedy?
Death is a part of life, if you die when your are old it is not a tragedy it is totally normal and natural. If you die young then it is a real tragedy. We don´t live forever which is the whole thing about life. Life is limited and your time here is short. This is the the whole motor of life, the engine. We have to live cause we are gonna die. In this film I say good bye to Märta and Bengt alv. I spend a lot of time with them before their time was up. It was a nice way to follow their last steps in life.
